Manchester United persuading Cristiano Ronaldo to stay
July 12, 2022Manchester United are making headway to calm down the situation with Cristiano Ronaldo. The club wants the 37-year-old striker to stay for another season and Richard Arnold is working to persuade the player’s camp.
Erik ten Hag kept his cards close to his chest when questioned about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future on Monday, while he stressed that the forward was unsellable as he’s part of his plans for the coming season.
According to The Times, United’s chief executive Richard Arnold has impressed Ronaldo’s entourage by the way he has handled the Portugal international’s desire to leave Old Trafford for a second time in his career.
Duncan Castles, who is renowned for being close to Jorge Mendes, reports: “On the one hand, Arnold has been sympathetic to Ronaldo’s discontent, granting his representatives permission to explore options at Chelsea and Bayern Munich and suitors in Italy and Spain. On the other, he has underlined Ronaldo’s importance to United and Ten Hag, while accelerating the club’s efforts to restructure a squad that finished sixth in last season’s Premier League despite the 37-year-old scoring 18 goals: a return only surpassed by Mohammed Salah and Son Heung-min.”
Arnold, who succeeded Ed Woodward at the helm of United’s board this year, has a lot of work to do to build his reputation in the football industry. His predecessor is joked about in inner football circles – but not with the Glazer family, who probably wish he was still working at Old Trafford.
We are still none the wiser about Ronaldo’s commitment to United next season, however, this may be a sign that he won’t be going anywhere this summer.
Ronaldo doesn’t appear to have any offers on the table that would take him back into the Champions League next season. On the other hands, United did not intend on trying to replace Ronaldo in the current transfer market. It is now seen as a problem they could deal without this summer and that gives Ten Hag a year to identify his preferred goalscorer.
As long as Ronaldo performs for United and leaves without too much noise next summer, I will try not to complain too much…
