The long wait for Africa’s most exhilarating Nyege Nyege is over and the festival is returning this September, following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s Nyege Nyege festival will be held at Itanda Falls, at the shores of River Nile in Jinja City, Uganda and will run from September 15th to 18th 2022.
Nyege Nyege returns after two years of lockdown and according to the organisers, this will be the most historic edition by far with a new location, fresh experiences, plus a massive line up of more than 300 artistes from all over the world.
Speaking about the event, Derek Debru, the Nyege Nyege festival co-founder said that; “Nyege Nyege will live up to its reputation, as the most adventurous and amazing party on Planet Earth, putting Uganda at the very centre”
Talent Africa CEO, Aly Allibhai noted that; “After two years of lockdown we are super excited to bring back the Nyege Nyege festival. We look forward to creating awesome event experiences at the beautiful new location. This edition will be very special and remembered for a long time”.
The festival founded on love, resilience, passion for music and shining light on Uganda, is going all-in this year, collaborating with collectives from across the continent, as well as online radio stations invited to present at the festival including Oroko Radio from Ghana.
It comes with a special emphasis on visual art installations, innovative stage design, a luxurious camping experience and new tourism activities, such as rafting the Nile rapids all the way to the festival’s shores!
By upgrading to a brand-new site, Nyege Nyege is confident that it will be able to offer revellers a more comfortable and spacious experience, while putting Itanda Falls on the map as one of East Africa’s most fascinating tourist destinations.
The festival will also explore a hybrid combination of digital experience and in-person event, hosting its signature event in Uganda, while connecting with the world through cutting edge virtual experiences,
including digital art exhibitions and augmented reality experiences, drawing on its highly acclaimed COVID hybrid edition of 2020, which brought together 40+ collectives and was followed by over 8 million people globally.
Conscious of the environmental impact of the festival, Nyege Nyege will partner with Bamboo Uganda to advocate for the use of bamboo and offset its carbon footprint by planting bamboo.
It should be noted that despite a two-year forced hiatus as a result of COVID, Nyege Nyege’s vision remains the same: to declutter the global culture space of old ideas about what African music is about, to dispel existing and oppressive stereotypes, and to provide more equitable access to international markets for African creatives, as well as a space for diverse voices from alternative music to connect with one another.
Along the known stages of Dark Star, Tropical Disco, Nyege Nyege Main Stage, Bell Club, Roots and Culture Stage, this year will see an expanded version of the Spirit of Uganda stage showcasing music and culture from all corners of Uganda, including food, crafts, music, and storytelling.
The festival will also collaborate with the superficial machine collective to create hybrid digital experiences connecting the festival to the world and satellite events held globally.
