PepGuardiola points finger of blame after Man City drop points in Liverpool title race
March 15, 2022Man City dropped points against Crystal Palace with Liverpool four points behind in second place.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his side committed the mistake of not converting chances against Crystal Palace in Monday night’s 0-0 draw.
And he pointing the finger of blame at the pitch, claiming the “grass [was] not perfect”.
The reigning Premier League champions were held to a goalless draw, moving four points ahead of Liverpool but having played a game more.
The Reds are in action against Arsenal on Wednesday, knowing a win will move them to a point behind City and the two met in the league next month.
Palace were well worth the point and on another evening could have nicked all three, with Guardiola admitting to BBC Sport and Sky after the final whistle that his side “struggled a little bit” but played a “really good game”.
“Luck doesn’t exist in football,” said Guardiola. “We have to score goals and we didn’t do it. We played to score goals and concede few. We struggled a little bit.
“We play a really good game. In 90 minutes we concede mistakes a little bit, but the way we played was really good.”
When pressed further on mistakes in the game, the former Barcelona coach said: “We didn’t score, that was the mistake.
“We played to win the game. We created more, we conceded few, The stats are there. The way we played was amazing in a difficult stadium – with the grass not perfect. We were there all the time so we did a good game.”
Guardiola bizarrely made no substitutions despite his team needing a goal.
The City boss explained that the team he put out from the off were playing well enough to stay on and that he liked what he saw on the pitch.
“The guys who were playing were playing good, that’s why I didn’t make changes,” he said.
“The team that was there today was there before and will be there in the next game. I am very pleased with the performance and the way we played.”
